Frequently Asked Questions About Exteriors
What exterior profiles and products do you offer?
We offer multiple siding and cornice profiles to suit your needs. These profiles include T&G, shiplap, forced-gap and others. Wood species include Cedar, Fir, White Pine, Cypress, Thermally Modified Poplar, White Oak, Reclaimed Woods and more. We have also partnered with Accoya and Kebony to provide both chemically modified and dually (chemical and thermal) modified woods.
What exterior products does Wellborn + Wright offer through its partnership with Accoya and Kebony?
In partnership with Accoya and Kebony, we offer premium decking, siding, exterior trim, and soffits crafted from their modified woods. Accoya uses acetylated Radiata Pine for exceptional durability, while Kebony uses furfurylated softwoods for hardwood-like performance, both ideal for residential and commercial exteriors.
What makes Accoya and Kebony suitable for outdoor use?
Accoya’s acetylation process enhances Radiata Pine’s resistance to rot, moisture, and UV damage, with a 50-year above-ground warranty. Kebony’s furylation process increases softwood density and durability, offering a 30-year warranty against rot and a Janka hardness of 1619 LBF, perfect for harsh weather conditions.
Can Accoya and Kebony products be customized for my project?
Yes, both Accoya and Kebony offer customization in profiles (e.g., shiplap, tongue-and-groove), textures (e.g., smooth, brushed, or charred), and finishes (e.g., stained, oiled, or uncoated). Wellborn + Wright tailors these materials to your design, ensuring seamless integration with your aesthetic vision.
How sustainable are Accoya and Kebony products?
Both are eco-friendly: Accoya is sourced from FSC®-certified, fast-growing forests and is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified. Kebony uses FSC®-certified softwoods and a bio-based liquid, reducing reliance on tropical hardwoods. These materials have a low carbon footprint and support sustainable construction.
What maintenance do Accoya and Kebony decking and siding require?
Accoya requires minimal maintenance; occasional cleaning with mild soap suffices, though end-grain sealing is recommended. Kebony needs no treatment beyond cleaning to maintain durability, but UV-inhibiting oil (e.g., Cutek) can preserve its rich brown color, or it can naturally patina to silver-grey.
Are Accoya and Kebony suitable for high-traffic or sun-exposed areas?
Yes, Accoya’s UV resistance and dimensional stability make it ideal for sun-exposed areas, while Kebony’s high density (670 kg/m³) ensures durability in high-traffic zones. Both perform well in extreme climates, from Texas heat to coastal humidity, with proper installation.
How do Accoya and Kebony compare for exterior trim and soffits?
Accoya offers superior stability with minimal swelling (4% tangentially) and a 50-year warranty, ideal for precise trim and soffit applications. Kebony’s hardness and rich color make it a premium choice for bold, durable trim, with a 30-year warranty and excellent resistance to weathering.
Can Wellborn + Wright’s Accoya and Kebony products be installed easily?
Yes, we offer products compatible with advanced systems like Grad’s Click-in Cladding™ for Kebony and QuickClip® for Accoya, enabling fast, precise installation without screws. Our team provides guidance or coordinates installation to ensure durability and alignment.
Are Accoya and Kebony cost-effective compared to traditional hardwoods?
While Accoya is slightly more expensive than Kebony, its 50-year lifespan and low maintenance justify the cost. Kebony, priced competitively with premium hardwoods like Ipe, offers similar durability with greater sustainability, making both excellent long-term investments.
