Frequently Asked Questions About Timbers and Box Beams

What types of timbers and box beams does Wellborn + Wright offer?

We provide both solid timbers and box beams crafted from reclaimed wood (e.g., antique American barn wood) and new wood (e.g., Domestic White Oak Euro White Oak, Walnut, Douglas Fir, Cedar). Options include hand-hewn, rough-sawn, smooth and bandsawn/circlesawn textures for a range of aesthetics from rustic to refined.

Solid timbers are single, solid pieces of wood, offering structural strength and a seamless look. Box beams are hollow, made by joining wood faces (typically 1/4“ or 5mm thick) to Baltic Birch, providing a lighter alternative that mimics solid beams while being more stable and easier to install.

Our box beams are primarily decorative, ideal for ceiling accents or wrapping structural elements like I-beams or ductwork. For structural applications, we recommend our solid timbers, such as Douglas Fir, Cypress or Cedar which are engineered for load-bearing purposes.

We offer customization in species (e.g., White Oak, Pine), textures (e.g., hand-hewn, sanded, band-sawn), finishes (e.g., stained, painted, or raw), and dimensions (up to 40’ long for box beams). Box beams can be crafted in 2, 3, or 4-sided configurations to suit your design.

Our reclaimed wood comes from century-old American barns and historic structures, carefully salvaged to preserve unique characteristics like nail holes and adze/broad axe marks. All materials are treated and kiln-dried to ensure they are free of pests.

Yes, box beams are an excellent solution for concealing unsightly elements like wiring, plumbing, or HVAC systems. Their hollow design allows for easy integration of utilities while maintaining a polished, solid-beam appearance.

Solid timbers may require structural engineering for load-bearing applications, while box beams are lighter and easier to install, often attached to ceilings or walls with standard carpentry tools. We provide guidance for builders, and our team can assist with installation if needed.
